Route: Gortys - Phaistos – Matala ‘The Hippies Beach’
Gortys: The Landmark of Law and Early Christianity
Our exploration begins at Gortys (or Gortyna), once one of Crete's most dominant ancient cities.
- Spiritual Heritage: You will see the remains of the historic St. Titus Cathedral, dedicated to the island's first Bishop. It stands as a testament to the early spread of Christianity in Crete.
- The Gortyn Code: The site is globally renowned for the "Gortyn Code," the oldest and most intact example of ancient Greek law ever discovered.
Phaistos: The Minoan Powerhouse
Next, we visit the Palace of Phaistos, an archaeological site of immense importance, second only to Knossos.
- The Setting: Perched on a hill 100 meters above sea level, the palace overlooks the lush Kato Messara plain. With Mt. Psiloritis as a backdrop and the Libyan Sea to the south, the views are breathtaking.
- Legendary Rule: Mythology names Rhadamanthys - son of Zeus and brother of King Minos - as the founder of the dynasty that ruled this wealthy and independent city-state.
Matala: Caves, Legends, and Rock ‘n’ Roll
We conclude our day at Matala, a former fishing village turned modern
holiday destination with a legendary past.
- Ancient Caves: The bay is famous for its soft limestone cliffs, where Roman and early Christian tombs were carved thousands of years ago. These caves, featuring rooms and windows, were even used as homes in various eras.
- The Hippie Era: In the 1960s and 70s, these caves became a paradise for hippies seeking peace and freedom. Matala attracted icons like Joni Mitchell (who immortalized the village in her song "Carey"), Bob Dylan, and Janis Joplin before the movement was interrupted by the political shifts of the 70s.
