Historical Museum of Crete: A Journey Through Cretan Culture and History

Discover the Historical Museum of Crete in Heraklion, a premier cultural destination showcasing the island's history, art, and traditions from the Byzantine era to the present day.

The Historical Museum of Crete (HMC) was founded in 1953 by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies (SCHS) and is housed in an iconic neoclassical building, the Andreas and Maria Kalokairinos House, in Heraklion. Its mission is to preserve and showcase the island's rich heritage, covering a period from the early Byzantine era to modern times.

Collections and Exhibits

The museum offers a comprehensive experience through permanent and temporary exhibitions that combine modern museological practices with digital applications. Its most significant collections include:

  • Medieval and Renaissance Collection: A glimpse into the Crete of past centuries.
  • Nikos Kazantzakis Room: Dedicated to the life and work of the great Cretan author.
  • Struggles for Freedom Collection: Heirlooms and artifacts from the island's historic battles.
  • Ethnographic Collection: The everyday life and traditions of the people of Crete.
  • Tour of Chandax: A unique representation of Heraklion during the 17th century.

A Vibrant Cultural Organization

The HMC is not merely a space for displaying artifacts, but an outward-looking organization. Through free educational programs, international scientific symposia (such as the International Cretan Studies Congresses), and cultural events in its auditorium, the museum serves as a hub for learning and research. Concurrently, the SCHS's activities extend to monument restoration and the digitization of archival material, ensuring historical memory is preserved for future generations.
